MEDIUMS

Virtual Medium for Innovation and Understanding in Medicine and Science

01. Overview

The Ikoku Virtual Medium for Innovation and Understanding in Medicine and Science (MEDIUMS) has been proposed as part of the Trusts Areas of Focus and Philanthropy dedicated to Education and Research and to Human and Environmental Health. All Trusts Areas have been established to fulfill a core mission of The Ikoku Trusts and The Ikoku Foundations to increase the public awareness, public knowledge, and public interest concerning Africa and its global diasporas, including communities in the Americas, Asia, Australasia/Oceania, and Europe. MEDIUMS shall be essential to that mission in the following ways:.

Fostering Medical Understanding

The Ikoku Charitable Trusts and The Ikoku Foundations understand that the fulfillment of their originating charitable purposes require programs that foster the understanding of the fundamentals of and future advances in medicine and health. Such enhancements in understanding should be among students, researchers, and the wider public, and should concern regions, peoples and subjects that are regularly under-researched and comparatively under-resourced. It is our intention to have MEDIUMS meet this need for more equitable support in medical knowledge and application.

Fostering Scientific Understanding

The Ikoku Charitable Trusts and The Ikoku Foundations also understand that the fulfillment of their originating charitable purposes require programs that foster the understanding of the fundamentals of and future advances in the sciences — applied, formal, natural, social, theoretical. As with medicine, such enhancements in scientific understanding should be among students, researchers, and the wider public, and should concern regions, peoples and subjects that are regularly under-researched and comparatively under-resourced. It is our intention to have MEDIUMS meet this need for more equitable support in scientific knowledge and application.

Enhancing Innovation

MEDIUMS shall therefore also have as an accompanying but no less essential objective the fostering of innovation in methods of education, research, and application in medicine, health, and the sciences. Such methodological innovation shall be of value to students, researchers, and the wider public. And it shall facilitate our objective to meet the aforementioned need for more equitable medical and scientific knowledge, support, understanding, and application.

Addressing Inequities

In these ways, The Ikoku Charitable Trusts and The Ikoku Foundations intend for MEDIUMS to reduce perennial inequities in the varied communities we serve, to especially improve mutual understanding, co-existence, and relations among peoples and societies in Africa and those across the world, and to ultimately enhance individual, community, civic and public life for all.
