People Brought Together By Ideas
African & Medical Humanities
A field that focuses on research and teaching at the intersection of health, medicine, and humanistic inquiry and expression pertaining to Africa and its global diasporas.
History & Development
Simultaneous use of medicine and the humanities is on retrievable record in the writings of the classical periods of Arabic, European and Mediterranean societies. But more precisely, “medical humanities” as a modern field, after the specialization of academic disciplines, establishes itself in the 1980s. Almost similarly, studies pertaining to Africa and its diasporas has an equally long history, and “African studies” (including specializations like African literature, history, etc) comes to the fore as a modern field among academic disciplines in the mid-twentieth century.
Present & Future
There is now a widely recognized need for knowledge and practice that brings together fields that were once overly specialized and separated, either geographically (Africa versus British) or disciplinarily (science versus humanities). The result is a burgeoning growth in research and education at the confluence of these fields, with intellectual and practical concerns equally attended to, given the stakes for enhancing care as well as cure for the more vulnerable of human populations.
